What happens when you run out
When a tank runs dry the engine cuts out and the car coasts, so the first job is getting it somewhere safe. Steer to the side of the road or into a lay-by if you can, put your hazards on, and then ring. On a motorway or dual carriageway, get into an emergency area or onto the hard shoulder, get everyone out of the car and behind the barrier, and make the call from there.
When we arrive we put the fuel in, and we do not leave until the engine has started and is running properly. Most cars fire up again without fuss once there is fuel in the tank. Some, diesels especially, need a few more turns of the key. If a car will not restart after running dry, we tell you what we are seeing at the kerb and what it needs, straight.
One thing worth saying plainly: putting the wrong fuel in is a different problem to running out. If you have filled with the wrong fuel, do not start the engine. Ring us, describe what happened, and we will tell you honestly what the car needs rather than guess at your expense.

I have put the wrong fuel in. Can you help?
Do not start the engine, and leave the ignition off if you can. Wrong fuel is a different job to running out. Ring us, describe exactly what happened, and we will tell you straight what the car needs rather than guess at your expense.
I have run out on the motorway. What should I do?
Get the car into an emergency area or onto the hard shoulder if you can, hazards on, and get everyone out and behind the barrier. Then ring us. We will work out from your location whether we can refuel where you are or whether the car needs to reach a safer spot first.
Will the car be alright after running dry?
Usually, yes. Most petrol cars restart within a few seconds of cranking once fuel is in. Diesels can take a little longer to pick it up. If the car will not restart after refuelling, we will tell you what we are seeing and what it needs while we are stood at it.
